What Students Learned

• Influenza is an enveloped RNA virus with three main types: A, B, and C.
• Hemagglutinin and neuraminidase functions and how they shape transmission and treatment.
• Why Influenza A causes the most severe disease and how it infects multiple species.
• Typical seasonal pattern (winter increase) and key symptoms such as fever, myalgia, sore throat, and cough.
• Diagnostic approach including rapid tests and PCR, and why Gram stain is not used.
• Mechanisms behind pandemics, especially the role of antigenic shift.
• First-line antiviral therapy and the importance of early initiation.
• Effectiveness and timing of influenza vaccination.

• The most common cause of acute tonsillitis is viral, not bacterial.

• Principles of responsible antibiotic use and why routine antibiotics are not recommended for viral infections.
• Safe analgesic choices for children and important contraindications such as avoiding aspirin due to Reye syndrome risk.
• When corticosteroids may be considered and when they should be avoided.
