To Give Contrast or Not: That Is the Key Question!

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Betül Tiryaki Baştuğ Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University, Bilecik, Turkey

This session provides a structured overview of the use of contrast media in radiological imaging.

The lecture focuses on the clinical decision-making process regarding when contrast administration is necessary, emphasizing the balance between diagnostic benefit and potential risks. Indications for contrast-enhanced imaging are reviewed across different organ systems, along with scenarios where non-contrast studies are sufficient. The risks associated with contrast media, including allergic reactions and contrast-induced nephropathy, are also discussed.

Diagnostic approaches are presented with emphasis on the role of CT, MRI, and ultrasound contrast agents in improving lesion detection, characterization, and staging. Key principles of contrast timing, enhancement patterns, and protocol selection are outlined in relation to common clinical conditions. Special patient populations, including those with renal impairment, pregnancy, and previous contrast reactions, are highlighted with practical management strategies.

Following the lecture, a Kahoot quiz was held to reinforce key concepts, prizes were awarded to top-performing students, and the session concluded with an interactive Q&A.
