Asthma

Dr. Şeyma Özden Department of Immunology and Allergy, Süreyyapaşa Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, İstanbul, Turkey

This session provides a structured overview of Asthma.

The lecture focuses on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of asthma, highlighting its chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by reversible airflow obstruction. Common triggers such as allergens, infections, exercise, and environmental factors are reviewed, along with typical symptoms including episodic wheezing, dyspnea, cough, and chest tightness.

Diagnostic approaches are discussed with emphasis on spirometry as the primary tool for demonstrating reversible airway obstruction. Peak expiratory flow monitoring and bronchodilator reversibility testing are also briefly reviewed. Differential diagnosis with other obstructive lung diseases is included.

Treatment strategies are outlined based on stepwise management principles, including inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and additional therapies for more severe cases. The importance of trigger avoidance, patient education, and proper inhaler use is emphasized in long-term disease control.

Following the lecture, a Kahoot quiz was held to reinforce key concepts, prizes were awarded to top-performing students, and the session concluded with an interactive Q&A.
