Indications for Surgical Treatment in Thyroid Diseases
This session provides a structured overview of surgical indications in thyroid diseases.
The lecture focuses on the major thyroid disorders requiring surgical evaluation, including benign nodular disease, multinodular goiter, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid malignancies. Clinical indications for surgery are discussed in detail, particularly compressive symptoms, cosmetic concerns, suspicion of malignancy, toxic nodular disease, and resistance or contraindications to medical therapy. Important preoperative assessment methods and risk stratification principles are also reviewed.
Diagnostic approaches are presented with emphasis on thyroid function tests, ultrasonography, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, and cytological classification systems used in clinical decision-making. Surgical treatment options, including lobectomy, total thyroidectomy, and lymph node dissection strategies, are outlined together with indications, advantages, and potential complications. Postoperative management and follow-up principles, including complications such as hypocalcemia and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, are discussed from a practical clinical perspective.
Following the lecture, a Kahoot quiz was held to reinforce key concepts, prizes were awarded to top-performing students, and the session concluded with an interactive Q&A.
