Addiction Medicine: Clinical Approach and Awareness
The Addiction Medicine: Clinical Approach and Awareness course is designed to provide medical students with a foundational understanding of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions.
The course covers the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction, common substances and addictive behaviors, clinical warning signs, and the impact of addiction on physical and mental health. Emphasis is placed on recognizing addiction as a chronic medical condition rather than a moral or social issue.
Participants will learn basic screening tools, principles of patient communication, and the importance of multidisciplinary management and referral pathways. Ethical considerations, stigma, and the physician’s role in prevention and early intervention are also discussed.
This course aims to improve clinical awareness, empathy, and preparedness for encountering patients with addiction in various healthcare settings.
