Basic Suturing Techniques – White Coat Academy Summer Course
As part of the White Coat Academy summer program, the Basic Suturing Techniques course was designed to equip medical students with one of the fundamental skills of surgical practice: suturing. The training began with a solid theoretical foundation and was followed by hands-on simulation sessions, providing participants with both technical knowledge and essential manual experience.
A Journey from History to Hands-on Application
The first part of the course explored the history of surgical suturing and the evolution of materials used in the practice. From ancient Egypt to modern operating rooms, students learned how suture threads, needle types, and techniques have advanced. Special emphasis was placed on the classification of suture materials — absorbable vs. non-absorbable, monofilament vs. multifilament — and the structural differences in needle tips.
Core Techniques and Clinical Knowledge
In the second module, students were introduced to fundamental suturing methods such as simple interrupted sutures, surgical knots, and wound closure techniques. Beyond technical skills, the curriculum covered wound healing physiology, dressing principles, scar management, and common complications like dehiscence and infection — all crucial topics for clinical readiness.
Simulation-Based Practice and Skill Reinforcement
The final segment was dedicated to supervised practice. Using synthetic simulation models, participants applied both basic and advanced suturing techniques. Key psychomotor competencies — including needle handling, suture tension control, and hand-eye coordination — were refined through direct instructor feedback in a low-risk, high-focus environment.
This comprehensive workshop not only strengthened students’ interest in surgery but also provided a structured and supportive setting for mastering one of the core competencies of clinical medicine.
